Cracking the Learning Code
Issue 14
Hello, Beyond the Label Family! π
We're back with another exciting edition of the Beyond the Label Newsletter, and you won't want to miss it! π
What are Learning Disabilities?
Learning disabilities like dyslexia, dysgraphia and auditory processing disorder are common neurodevelopmental disorders that impair a person's ability to receive, process, analyze or communicate information.

They affect the brainβs ability to interpret what one sees and hears leading to difficulties with reading, writing, speech, motor skills or attention. Learning disabilities run a spectrum from mild challenges to severe impacts requiring substantial support.

Identifying signs early, tailored interventions and accommodations are key for children with learning disabilities to reach their potential. Many thrive with the right skills training, assistive technology and self-advocacy tools leveraging their strengths.
Spotlight β Meet Sara, Age 12 with Dyslexia
Sara always felt βdifferentβ struggling to read, write and memorize facts teachers demanded with ease from classmates. Despite average intelligence, Sara described feeling confused and βdumbβ before her dyslexia diagnosis at age 9 brought relief.

Today, reading remains challenging for Sara but text-to-speech technology helps immerse herself independently in books that interest her most β fantasy fiction and Greek mythology tales! With 1:1 tutoring 2 times a week strengthening phonics skills this year along with classroom accommodations, Sara has regained writing confidence too. She can now share her vibrant imagination and clever wit through words.
Tips for School & Learning
Building Confidence & Self-Esteem

Children with learning disabilities often internalize academic struggles as self-doubt, failure and shame. Make frequent specific praise effort over achievement. Highlight what is accomplished, not missed. Share stories of successful, happy role models like inventors, CEOs and artists who have dyslexia and learning issues mastering passions in their own style.
Empower your child to legally request needed accommodations, fully displaying competency. Self-advocacy tools build lifelong agency and self-belief. With patient family support nurturing strengths and strategy development tailored to their learning profile, their path can shine bright!
