The Myth of Independence
Why We Need to Embrace Interdependence?
Issue 107
Hello, Beyond the Label Family! 👋
We're back with another exciting edition of the Beyond the Label Newsletter, and you won't want to miss it! 🌈

Western society is built on the idol of the “Self-Made Man.” We prize independence above almost everything else. We view needing help as a flaw and self-sufficiency as the ultimate virtue.
For the disability and mental health community, this narrative is toxic.
The truth is, no one is truly independent. We all rely on infrastructure we didn’t build, food we didn’t grow, and technology we didn’t invent. We are all interdependent.
For individuals with disabilities, acknowledging the need for help is often framed as “giving up” independence. We need to reframe this immediately.
Asking for help is not weakness; it is resourcefulness.
Delegating tasks that drain your energy is not laziness; it is strategy.
When we embrace interdependence, we allow humanity to shine. We allow others the gift of being useful (which boosts their mental health), and we conserve our own energy for the things that truly matter — our work, our passions, and our relationships.
Let’s stop apologising for needing each other. Let’s start viewing our support networks as our greatest asset.

Join the Beyond the Label movement and make a difference! Together, we can create a world that celebrates unique abilities and embraces diversity. 🌍
