Issue 115
Hello, {{first_name|Beyond the Label Family!}} 👋
We're back with another exciting edition of the Beyond the Label Newsletter, and you won't want to miss it! 🌈
In the context of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), we focus heavily on what we can see: race, gender, and visible physical disabilities. These are crucial conversations. However, a massive demographic often slips through the cracks: the invisibly disabled.

Statistics suggest that the majority of disabilities are not immediately apparent. This creates a unique dilemma in the workplace known as the Disclosure Gap.
Employees with invisible conditions constantly calculate the risk of disclosure.
"If I tell my boss I have bipolar disorder, will I be passed over for promotion?"
"If I ask for a quiet room due to sensory processing issues, will I be labeled high-maintenance?"
When psychological safety is low, disclosure goes down. When disclosure goes down, accommodations aren't made. When accommodations aren't made, talent burns out and leaves.
We have to change the narrative. We need to normalize the idea that everyone has a unique set of needs, visible or not.
We can start by offering flexibility as a default, not a special favor. When remote work, flexible hours, or asynchronous communication are standard options, people with invisible disabilities can thrive without having to disclose private medical information to justify their needs.
Let’s make the invisible visible—not by forcing people to out themselves, but by building a culture so inclusive that "outing" oneself isn't a risk.
Let’s discuss: Does your workplace offer flexibility by default, or do you have to "earn" it through medical justification?
