Hello, {{first_name|Beyond the Label Family!}} 👋
We're back with another exciting edition of the Beyond the Label Newsletter, and you won't want to miss it! 🌈
There is a term in the disability community that every parent, teacher, and leader should know: The Glass Child.
These are the siblings of children with significant special needs. They are called "glass" children not because they are fragile, but because we tend to look right through them to focus on the brother or sister with higher needs.

These siblings often grow up with a profound sense of empathy and maturity beyond their years. They are the defenders on the playground, the mini-caregivers at home, and the ones who learn early that "fair" doesn't always mean "equal."
But this maturity comes at a cost. Glass children often carry invisible worries. They worry about their parents' stress levels. They suppress their own problems because they don't want to add to the family burden. They learn to be "low maintenance" to balance out the "high maintenance" needs of their sibling.
From a mental health perspective, this is a heavy load for a developing mind. They are at risk for anxiety and perfectionism, driven by a need to be the "easy" child.
Recognising these siblings is vital. We need to ensure they have:
Safe spaces where they can vent their frustrations without judgment.
Time alone with parents where the focus is 100% on them.
Validation that their needs, achievements, and struggles are just as important as their sibling's.
To the siblings out there: We see you. You are not invisible. Your story matters just as much.
