Issue 123

Hello, {{first_name|Beyond the Label Family!}} 👋

We're back with another exciting edition of the Beyond the Label Newsletter, and you won't want to miss it! 🌈

When we talk about the future of disability care, we often talk about government funding and group homes. But statistically, the future of care lies in the hands of one group: The Siblings.

Siblings of individuals with disabilities have a unique and powerful perspective. They will likely have the longest relationship with the disabled individual of anyone on earth—longer than the parents, longer than any social worker.

This creates a complex mix of pressure and devotion. Many siblings grow up knowing, unspoken or spoken, that one day they will take the baton. This can influence their career choices, their choice of partner, and even where they choose to live. It is a lifelong commitment that starts in childhood.

Because of this, siblings are often the fiercest advocates. They know the nuances of their sibling’s communication that no textbook could teach. They see the human being, not the diagnosis.

However, as a community, we must support them better. We cannot wait until a crisis (like the aging of parents) to include them in the conversation.

  • We need to include siblings in future planning early on.

  • We need to normalize the conversation about their own mental health and boundaries.

  • We need to celebrate them not just as "helpers," but as individuals with their own dreams.

Let’s celebrate the siblings. They are the unsung heroes of the disability community, carrying a torch of love and responsibility that lasts a lifetime.

Join the Beyond the Label movement and make a difference! Together, we can create a world that celebrates unique abilities and embraces diversity. 🌍
