Issue 121
Hello, {{first_name|Beyond the Label Family!}} 👋
We're back with another exciting edition of the Beyond the Label Newsletter, and you won't want to miss it! 🌈
If you have a friend or colleague who is a caregiver for someone with a disability or chronic illness, you have likely said these five words: "Let me know if you need anything."
It comes from a place of love. It is well-intentioned. But for a caregiver who is already overwhelmed by decision fatigue, this open-ended offer is just one more thing to manage. They have to assess their needs, determine if your offer is genuine, figure out what is appropriate to ask for, and then overcome the guilt of asking.

Usually, they will just say, "I'm fine, thanks."
If we want to support the mental health of the "strong ones"—the organizers, the advocates, the carers—we need to be specific. We need to move from passive availability to active support.
Here is how to shift the dynamic:
Don't ask, just offer. Instead of "Can I bring dinner?", try "I'm making lasagna on Tuesday. I'm dropping one off at your porch at 6 PM. You don't need to come to the door."
Check on them, not just the patient. When you call, don't start with "How is [Child's Name] doing?" Start with, "How are you holding up? I want the real answer."
Be the distraction. Caregivers are often consumed by their role. Sometimes the best support isn't talking about the disability; it's talking about movies, sports, or office gossip. Give them a mental break from their reality.
True community support isn't about grand gestures. It's about noticing the person behind the caregiving role and refusing to let them disappear into it.
