Issue 112

Hello, {{first_name|Beyond the Label Family!}} 👋

We're back with another exciting edition of the Beyond the Label Newsletter, and you won't want to miss it! 🌈

I read a quote recently that stopped me in my tracks: "Normal is just a cycle on a washing machine."

It’s funny, but it points to a painful truth. We spend an exorbitant amount of energy striving for a standard of "normal" that doesn't actually exist. In biology, nature loves variation. There is no "normal" tree or "normal" cloud. Yet, when it comes to human neurobiology and physical ability, we have created a rigid, narrow box and labelled it "The Standard."

For the special needs community, this box is a source of immense stress.

  • Parents exhaust themselves trying to get their children to hit milestones on a "standard" timeline.

  • Neurodivergent adults burn out trying to mask their traits to fit into "standard" corporate culture.

  • Society judges anyone who colours outside the lines of "standard" behaviour.

We are trying to force square pegs into round holes, and then blaming the pegs for not fitting. The result isn't "normalcy"—it's trauma. It is the crushing weight of inauthenticity.

What if we stopped striving for normal and started striving for authentic?

Authenticity means acknowledging that every human has a unique operating system. Some of us run on iOS, some on Android, and some on Linux. None are broken; they just require different interfaces to function at their best.

When we release the pressure to be normal, we create space for people to be effective. We stop wasting energy on masking and start using that energy for growth, connection, and creativity.

Reflect with me: Where in your life are you forcing a "square peg" solution? What would happen if you stopped?
