Issue 134
Hello, {{first_name|Beyond the Label Family!}} 👋
We're back with another exciting edition of the Beyond the Label Newsletter, and you won't want to miss it! 🌈
Over the past few weeks, we've explored the building blocks of a truly inclusive and supportive community: from fostering belonging and shifting perspectives on disability to championing mental health and celebrating a full spectrum of abilities. If there is one common thread that ties all these conversations together, it is this: this work is never finished.

Inclusion is not a project with a start date and an end date. You can't "complete" it and tick a box. It is a practice—an ongoing, dynamic commitment to learning, adapting, and improving. It is a journey, not a destination.
Thinking of inclusion as a practice has several powerful implications:
It Demands Continuous Learning: A project-based mindset suggests that once you've completed the training or launched the ERG, the work is done. A practice-based mindset understands that the world is always changing. Language evolves, our understanding of different conditions deepens, and new challenges emerge. A commitment to inclusion requires a commitment to being a lifelong student.
It Allows for Imperfection: When you are "practicing" something, whether it's a musical instrument or a new language, you expect to make mistakes. The goal is not perfection, but progress. This mindset is crucial for inclusion work. We will sometimes say the wrong thing or design a flawed policy. A practice-based approach allows us to see these moments not as failures, but as opportunities to learn, apologise, and refine our approach.
It Requires Active, Ongoing Effort: A project can become dormant. A practice requires consistent attention. It means embedding inclusion into our daily routines and decision-making processes. It’s asking "Whose perspective is missing?" in every meeting. It's checking documents for accessibility as a standard step. It's making a conscious effort to use inclusive language every day.
This journey is our shared responsibility. It belongs to every leader, every manager, and every team member. The goal is not to reach a mythical endpoint called "The Inclusive Workplace," but to engage in the daily practice of building a better, more supportive, and more human community for everyone. What is one way you will "practice" inclusion this week?
