Issue 116

Hello, {{first_name|Beyond the Label Family!}} 👋

We're back with another exciting edition of the Beyond the Label Newsletter, and you won't want to miss it! 🌈

One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned from the special needs community is this: Behaviour is communication.

We are conditioned to view behaviour through a lens of compliance. A quiet child is "good." A loud child is "bad." An employee who sits still is "focused." An employee who paces is "distracted."

But when we label behaviour as "bad" or "disruptive," we stop thinking. We judge, we punish, and we move on. We miss the message entirely.

When words fail—due to a developmental delay, sensory overload, extreme stress, or trauma—actions take over.

  • That "tantrum" in the grocery store might be a scream of physical pain from sensory overload.

  • That colleague snapping at you in a meeting might be communicating severe burnout or anxiety.

  • That withdrawal and silence might be a sign of feeling unsafe.

True support begins when we swap judgment for curiosity. Instead of asking, "Why are they acting like that?" we need to ask, "What is this person trying to tell me that they cannot say with words?"

This shift is the bedrock of mental wellness for both the individual and the caregiver/manager. Judgment creates conflict; curiosity creates connection. It turns a battle of wills into a problem-solving session.

Next time you see a behaviour that frustrates you, pause. Take a breath. Ask yourself: What is the unmet need here? You might be surprised by what you hear when you listen to the actions.
