Asking for Help

A Strategic Leadership Skill

Issue 106

Hello, Beyond the Label Family! πŸ‘‹

We're back with another exciting edition of the Beyond the Label Newsletter, and you won't want to miss it! 🌈

In the corporate world, a CEO who insists on doing everything themselves is viewed as a bottleneck. A CEO who delegates effectively is viewed as a strong leader.

Why don’t we apply this same logic to our personal lives and health journeys?

For those navigating chronic illness, disability, or mental health struggles, asking for help is often accompanied by shame. But in reality, asking for help is a high-level executive function skill. It requires:

  1. Self-Awareness: Knowing your own limits and capacity.

  2. Communication: Clearly articulating what is needed.

  3. Team Building: Identifying the right person for the task.

Asking for help is an act of advocacy. It ensures sustainability. If you burn out trying to prove you can do it all alone, you help no one.

So, rebrand β€œneeding help” in your mind. You aren’t being a burden; you are being a project manager of your own life. You are ensuring your long-term success by utilizing the resources available to you.

Today, challenge yourself to ask for one small thing. Flex that muscle. It gets stronger every time you use it.
